Free Read Book Thoughts (1)

For my free reading book, Warriors: Into the Wild, there are only a couple things that truly interest more. In other words, things that were brought to my attention from how the author has created this writing. The one thing that was brought to my attention was the description of a certain character through their dialogue and actions. The other thing is the character development. Before I give you examples of these things, I will give you a little summary of the book so far.

This book is based off of a forest setting where there are these wild cats  that survive in the forest. Between the wild cats there are four different clans, ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan. The main character is named Rusty at the beginning, he is a kittypet. A kittypet is a cat that is not a stray, but is owned by people. Rusty, the kittypet, gets more and more intrested in the wild and finally meets wild cats from ThunderClan. He is offered to join their clan, but it is very unlikely that a kittypet joins a clan. Rusty joins and is named Firepaw as he owns his apprenticeship to train to become a warrior. Warrior’s fight for their clan in keeping their territory for hunting grounds to feed their people. Firepaw continues to train to one day be a warrior.

Erin Hunter’s books are very easy to read with great character description and development. At the beginning of the book, Rusty is only a kittypet and decides to accept the offer of being in the ThunderClan. That right there is a bold move because of the fact that he is changing his life basically and learning a new culture. Lionheart, a cat from ThunderClan says, “You have a lot to learn” (Hunter 29). Him saying that just shows you that Firepaw or Rusty, is accepting this culture that he barely even knows about. He’s accepting the challenge to live in the wild instead of being spoon fed as a kittypet.

Lastly, Hunter’s description of a character through their actions and dialogue is so clear that’s it’s hard to miss. A cat named Tigerclaw, from ThunderClan, is portrayed as this grumpy cat that only cares about himself. Tigerclaw doesn’t have a lot of trust in Firepaw because he was a kittypet and isn’t born with wild cat blood. “Tigerclaw growled. “Or it might make him give in to kittypet weakness right at the moment of attack'” (Hunter 60). Through this dialogue it just shows that Tigerclaw could careless about anyone, but himself. Later on, his apprentice Ravenpaw was looked down upon. When Tigerclaw said this, “Even you, Firepaw, have learned something this morning. If  Ravenpaw picked up things as quickly as you, he’d be a credit to me instead of an embarrassment. Imagine being shown up by a kittypet” (Hunter 67). Like wow, what harsh words he hasn’t to say about his own apprentice! This quote shows hatred to not only Ravenpaw, but also Firepaw giving Firepaw hints he doesn’t deserve being a wild cat.
